I had three bananas in the morning.
UNALM, yes UNALM... that's the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. My friend David tries to recommend places that are off the beaten path.
While I was waiting for David, I had a bag of Pretzels.
This University has an agriculture program, and what they do is have almost what we would call back home a "Green Market," except it is pretty extensive, and nobody is selling Designer Soups.
They have a large Nursery, an (I think) Organic Vegetable stand, a Meat Market, a few booths that sell Roots and Supplements, an Organic Coffee Store, a Dessert booth, and two (or maybe three -- it's slow on a Tuesday) restaurants.
The restaurant serves classic Peruvian food. There was Fish, Beef, Pork and Chicken, as far as I could tell. And there some things on the menu I'm not sure about.
As is my plan here South of the Equator, I ordered Too Much Food. I started with a Tamale with Pork.
Huge and delicious. I really like Tamales. I ate about half of it.
Next up, Chicharron. That word means a lot of different things in the world of Peruvian food, but in this case, it is Pork that's been cooked, but then thrown on a griddle to make it, I don't know, Extra Wonderful. I ordered a half order. and David ordered the full order as his Main Course.
For my main dish, I had the Sancochado.
This is a Soup that has some sort of Meat (I think it is Beef, but there are lots of ways to make this dish), Vegetables, a hunk of Giant Corn, Potatoes, and sometimes some other stuff. The items for the soup come separate... you cut it up and create the soup yourself. They brink the bowl with the broth separately.
I think that the broth is Chicken-based, but that's just a guess. I ate all of the Meat, all the Vegetables, and half of the Potatoes. After Lunch, we looked at the desserts, and then kept walking.
