Hot & Soul

Today's daytime eating was covered in another post.

I had to kill some time between work and 9:00 (when I had to go back to the office to do tomorrow morning's stuff), so I headed over to Hot & Soul on US1 and Oakland Park Blvd.

This is the place that had a rave review in the Sun Sentinel a few months ago. I've been there a couple of times now, and every bite has been delicious. Every time.

For my first dish, I had the Gumbo Yumbo.

This is not your classic Gumbo. There was Sausage, Chicken and some sort of Ham going on in a (not thickened) broth, topped with just a little Rice. It had a slight kick to it, but the waiter offered me hot sauce, so I added some Crystal and scarfed down the whole thing.

For my Main Course, I ordered the Chicken Adobo.

I had this on my first visit and really liked it. It was just as good this time. The Chicken had to have been stewing for a while in its sauce. I can't really describe the taste, but there were whole garlic cloves and peppercorns, so I was happy. Whatever it was, there was a distinct combination of flavors going on, and it worked well. It was served on what was billed as Jasmine Rice. I guess my palette isn't sophisticated enough; I couldn't tell how Jasmine Rice is any different from Regular Rice. I'm not complaining -- just bemoaning my lack of Rice Knowledge.

Mike, one of the owners, stopped by my table to say hello. He seems like a nice guy; I'm glad that he has reported an upturn in business. This is a good restaurant tucked away in a hard-to-find corner of a mall. I hope that they stick around for a while. It makes me think that there could be a whole slew of wonderful restaurants out there that just a few people know about. I want to commit to trying new places, but there are so many 'old' places here in South Florida that I like... that's a hard commitment to make and keep.

Dessert? I don't think so. I should have had a cup of Coffee, but I just went back to the office to print some letters.

That's it for today; will report next from Lima.
