Lima Day 3: My God, They Have a Cebiche District!

Sabado, 16 Agosto

The eating started early this morning. I went to La Lucha, which is a sandwich shop by Parque Kennedy. Since it was the weekend, you're allowed to have a Pork Sandwich for Breakfast. When in Rome, I figured, so I ordered on with Fries.

On the way back from there, I stopped at my favorite little store and had a 74 cent Shredded Chicken Sandwich.
I was meeting Fernado for Lunch. He picked me up, and we headed to a neighborhood near San Borja called San Luis.

According to Fernando (and confirmed in this article in Spanish in Peru's main newspaper), there is a street in San Luis named La Rosa Toro that has the most cebicherias in Lima - 43 of them! I had discovered Los Cantaritos while stumbling around Facebook. Fernando is VERY familiar with this street, so off we went.

We started by sharing a Hot Mixed Plate.

This baby had Fish on a Stick, Scallops Parmesan, Seafood Tequenos, Fried Seafood, and some Yucca. And it was on fire.

And you you, when there's a fire, I shoot a video. Here you go.

We split the appetizer pretty much 50/50. I had four Scallops, but Fernando had all the Yucca.

Next up: Leche de Tigres. Basically, a glass of Cebiche. Mine was make from Conchas Negras (black Clams) and Fernando's was regular Fish.

For our Main Courses, I chose one of the Daily Specials -- A whole Fish, stuffed with Seafood and then topped with Cheese and baked.

It was pretty awesome. They told me what kind of fish it was, but he spoke to fast for me to understand. I did pick up that it was from a River somewhere. I made quick work of it, except for the Head, Tail and Bones.

Fernando had a Cebiche made from a dried Fish. I had it once somewhere, and it was pretty good. He had no complaints with his.

After Lunch we waddled back to the car, and Fernando drove us to the Gran Mercado Mayorista de Lima.

Basically, this is the wholesale Vegetable Market, where just about everything is bought by the huge sac. It was late on Saturday, so most places were closed, but we walked around a little and did some inspections.

These very random pictures show Giant Carrots, me inspecting some Red Peppers and Purple Corn, Fernando posing with Onions, me checking out some HUGE Squashes -- over 50 pounds each, and last, a Lady selling loose Giant Corns. I bought some. I may do nothing with them, but I bought some.

Later that night, when bouncing from one casino to another, I stopped at Patagonia Restaurant, right in Miraflores. It's an Argentine place, of all things. The foods always good, and the service is always terrible. This night, they lived up to both standards.

I ordered what I always get there... the Lomo a la Pimienta -- Steak au Poivre. It's served with Creamed Potatoes.

After explaining to the moron waiter that I wanted my Steak Bright Red ('en vivo' -- 'alive,' I told him), he thought about it and said, "Medium?" I finally got my point across, and the kitchen made it perfectly, like they always do.

Around midnight, on the way home, I stopped at Tierra Santa for a Lamb Shawarma.

It was good, but Frozen Grapes would have been better. I bought some today, so I'm good to go. Here's my steps -- there were a lot again.
