Lima Day 10: Astrid y Gaston

Saturday, May 17

Ed and I got a fairly early start on Saturday. On the way to Mcdonalds for Coffee (he likes to watch the comings & goings of people from a seat at the window, we stopped at a street joint in Miraflores for what I thought would be Pre-Breakfast, but it turned out to be Breakfast.

That was a Tamale Sandwich, a Egg and Hot Sausage on a Bun (think Peruvian Egg McMuffin) and a Cafe con Leche. It was tasty, Cheap (around US$3 for the whole thing) and a very colorful Photo Op.

We walked round town a little more, I dropped off my laundry, and we were now on time to hit Per-Lizza, the Empanada place. I had taken Ed there last year, and he had correctly identified their Empanadas a far superior to all others.

For what I thought was my Breakfast, but turned out to be Lunch, we both had the same thing: Mushroom and Cheese Empanada and one with Chicken and Mushrooms.

Ed put it really well when he said, "If I lived here, I would come here every day and eat these until I got sick of them."

That wa sit for the day. Cinthya came over before We set out for DInner. She broke open a bag of Sweet Potato chips. I had three or four.

Our Dinner reservations were at Astrid y Gaston. AyG recently moved to a newer, gorgeous building in San Isidro. They also recently placed 18th in the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. They were 14 last year, so they needed to step up their game.

We were hungry, so we showed up an hour and a half early for our reservation, but they accommodated us anyway.

Cinthya ordered some Fruit Juice Drink (I had Sparkling Water), and they started us with some Bread, Olives and Peanuts tossed in Curry.

I had half of the Bread and some of the Green Olives.

At AyG, they encourage sharing, so we ordered three Appetizers and one Main Course. It made our waiter ecstatic. The first two that arrived were the Pulpo and the Calamari.

The Pulpo was cut up and served on a bed of something Potato-like. I'm not sure what it was, but it was very, very good. The Calamaris were fried and (according to the menu) stuffed with something or another with some sort of secret, mystical Sauce. They would have explained it to us if we wanted, but we just went with it. Lucky for me, Cinthya was willing to share.

Happy to eat it; Sad to see it go
Our next 'Appetizer' was Scallops Saltado.

These Scallops were stir-fried with Oriental-ish Vegetables. I loved it. Cinthya said it wasn't her favorite, but she had no problem putting away her half of the plate.

For our Main Course, we shared the Arroz con Pato (Rice with Duck). As regular readers may be aware, I love Duck. This one did nothing to make me change my mind. It looked and smelled delicious. We both posed with the Duck.

Ed is giving me pointers on taking Blog photos.

As with the other dishes, I had to keep up to eat my half of it. It was freaking awesome.

As we were finishing up the Duck, Astrid walks by. She's the first half of Astrid y Gaston and -- although not as famous as her husband -- she's pretty well-known. Cinthya recognized her, and Astrid chatted with us for a little while and was gracious enough to take a couple of photos with us.

That was it. No dessert or Coffee (we were full), and we wound up walking halfway home to work off some of the food.

Speaking of walking, here's my steps.
