Except for Christmas, and my birthday, and Football Season, and when I'm on Vacation, Soup Week is my favorite time of the year.
Before we ate at The Hot Pot last night, we went to Foodtown and I stocked up on a lot of Vegetables to make a big old thing of Vegetable Soup. They are like the United Nations of Supermarkets, and they carry everything. It's really just a case of how brave I feel like being.
So Monday night, I got home and made a huge batch of Soup. I started with two gallons of Water, and added the following Vegetables and Spices:
You've got some Jalapenos, Bean Sprouts, three different kinds of 'Choys' (don't as me which), Baby Carrots, Broccoli, Napa Cabbage, Onions, Cilantro, Okra, Cauliflower, Green Onions and Oyster Mushrooms. On the Spice side of things were four Pho Cubes, Chopped Garlic Slivers (they go with everything!), Some fresh Pepper that I ground into the Soup and a little Fried Garlic. The Fried Garlic seemed like a good idea when I bought it, but it's pretty much useless (or I haven't found the right way to use it), so I toss some in here and there. Hopefully, it will be finished, but probably not for another three years.
I brought it to a simmer, and then I went to sleep.
When I woke up... Soup! First, I had some Broth, just for Quality Control purposes.
Delicious. Then I parceled it into vats, to better enjoy Soup Week.
I set one aside for Lunch today, but there was still a little left after the parceling, so I added some more Onions, Green Onions and King Oyster Mushrooms to the remainder (I cut up the Mushrooms) and set it to simmer for the day.
For Lunch, I heated up one of those bad boys of Soup.
Later on at the office, I had some Frozen Grapes. I still have three bags left from when they were 99 cents.
When I got home, I made a Bowl of the Mushroom/Onion Soup that was simmering.
The Onions weren't that soft. I probably should have left it on a higher heat, but I decided to play it safe, and had to live with the results.
There was still one more Bowl of Soup left on the Oven, but I needed (wanted?) some protein, so I remembered my friend Jay.
Jay is a fisherman, and he takes people out on his charter when he can. He has a lot of fish, and he Smokes it. Smokes it for the people who charter his boat, and for personal consumption. Last week, Jay hit me up with some pieces of Smoked Fish.
They were still in the refrigerator, and I ate two of the three pieces that he gave me, followed by some Frozen Grapes.
They were fabulous. I wish that he would let me pay him for some, and I could cop in bulk, but he just wants to give me some when he has extra. Oh, well. I used to buy Smoked Fish at the place on State Road 84, but they've been gone a while now, and I can't find a good replacement.
Later, I finished the rest of the simmering Mushroom/Onion Soup.
That's it for the day. Here's my steps. Zero Very Active minutes. I guess eating Soup doesn't count.
