LIMA DAY 1: Un Poco de Todo

Friday, March 6

A Poco de Todo = A Little of Everything. Except Soup.

I didn't go out last night, so I woke up fairly fresh and had time to grab something before I had to call work at 9:00. I walked over to Mercado #1 on the Miraflores/Surquillo border, and I visited my old friend, The Tamale Lady.

You get two pictures because she was so excited to see me.

She cut my Tamale in half (I got a Pork one today), and put them on Bread and gave me some Onions to go. When I got home, I had one of them with some Tari Sauce and put the opther away for some undetermined time in the future.

For Lunch, I met Alex and Cesar at El Merlin de Cabo Blanco in Lince. Cesar tried to find a place I haven't been to before... he needs to keep trying; I've been there twice.

We started by sharing three dishes: Conchas a la Parmesan (Scallops Parmesean), Assorted Wontons (some with Crab, some with Fish, and some with Shrimp) and Hueveras (fried Fish Roe).

I had a third of the Scallops and Wontons (the Crab ones were outstanding) and just a little Hueveras. I like them, but I had two dishes coming, so I was saving myself.

Speaking of Main Dishes, I had a Cebiche garnished with Crab Meat (Se Salio de Mar), and Rice With Seafood (Arroz Arrecife). The Cebiche was more than Excellent - it was Super Excellent, and I have no idea how the Rice dish was, but I ate half of it anyway.

Alex had a Grilled Fish Filet, and Ceasar had Scallops and Rice, Northern Style.

Alex hates getting Blog Photos taken, and Cesar has apparently never met a Camera he didn't like.

After a not nearly long enough period to recuperate, I met David for Dinner at Superba in Lince. How did Superba get its name, you ask? Good question... well it turns out that the place used to be called "Superbar" and then the "R" fell off. And voila: Superba.

Anyway, they're a classic Peruvian 'Taberna' -- that's kind of an old-school neighborhood bar. Except you go there to hang with your friends, not to meet new people. There's no actual Bar -- it's all tables.

David said that they had good food, and unlike Cesar, he never runs out of places to introduce me to. So we order two Tacu Tacus. One came with Lomo Saltado, and the other one with a Steak Milanese.

We shared both of them. The Steak Milanese was OK, but the Lomo Saltado was really good. I did no justice to my half of the food, and really just picked at it a little.

After that, I made some donations to the local casinos. Around midnight, on the way home, I stopped and had a Pork Sandwich.

That's it. Here's my steps.
