Lima Day 7: Veronika's Birthday

Wednesday, December 16

It was Veronika's birthday. I've been friends with her and Garry for years, and I'm usually in town for her birthday, sio it has kind of turned into an annual event.

I geared up for the big day by eating a large Breakfast. I took a walk, and wound up at one of the 36479343 mini grocery stores that also sell baked goods. This one has Empanadas. They're not as great as the Empanada place, but they're very good, and they are closer.

So I stocked up. I got an assortment of Empanadas, and -- just because they were there and looked delicious -- two Chocolate Cake-y things.

I downed the Cake-y things while the Empanadas were nuking. There was a Cheese Empanada, one filled with Lomo Saltado, One filled with Aji de Gallina, and the other thing was a Pastel de Acelga, which is kind of like a Spinach Pie, except different.

It took me a few hours to eat all the Empanadas and the Pastel, and I tossed some of the not-filled Bread parts. That whole bag o' Food set me back 16 1/2 soles, which is less than five bucks to those of us that speak in dollars. That held me for the rest of the afternoon.

I met Garry and Veronika and Veronika's mom and we headed out to Amoramar in Barranco. At the risk of being redundant, it is one of my favorite places.

As soon as we sit down, they bring us a small tasting item and some Bread and Cheese to spread on it. Today it was Steak Tartar on a Plantain Chip.

I'm sure that there was a different name for the Tartar, but that's what it was. The Bread was uneventful, but the Cheese had a whole backstory, which I paid no attention to.

In a development that will shock absolutely nobody, I was the only one to order a First Course.

That's their Ceviche Nikkei, which -- in this case -- was Fish and Mixed Seafood with the Sauce poured over it at the table, and some Sesame Seeds sprinkled on top. I was happy. And even happier that I didn't have to share any.

For our Main Courses, Veronika's Mom and I both ordered the Tuna Saltado (it was a Tuna kind of night for me). Veronika had a Causa stuffed with Octopus, and Garry ordered the Rice and Duck.

Veronika, Garry and I all cleared our plates. Either mom doesn't have a big appetite, or she didn't like it. I can't picture not liking it, but what do I know.

What I do know is that the girls take a nice photo:

For Dessert, both Garry and Veronika ordered some Baked Apple thing with Ice Cream, and I ordered what they called a Napoleon, that also came with Ice Cream. Mom may not have been hungry, because she passed on Dessert.

We all cleaned our plates and bowls and whatever.

As if that wasn't enough, we got to sing "Feliz Cumpleanos" to Veronika.

And if THAT wasn't enough, they brought out more dessert with our check.

Then, that was enough. But there is always time for a selfie with the pretty hostess.
