LIMA DAY 3: A Punto Azul Kind of Day

Tuesday, December 1

I am getting too old for this. It's not my place to speak for Ed, but he's getting too old for this, too.

By 'this,' I mean staying out late, getting up early, and eating like we are afraid that they are going to run out of Food. We were both laid up most of the day -- I went out a couple of times to get some stuff done.

For my first excursion, I went over to the apartment that I am renting next week and brought some stuff to the guy that I rent it from (when you back and forth for as long as I have, you 'mule' hard-to-get things for your friends). That apartment is a half-block from Punto Azul, so I stopped in for Lunch.

Punto Azul is a popular mid-range Cebicheria. There's usually a line, but this was just before the Lunch rush, so I sat down and ordered my two favorite dishes, Fish Cebiche in a Red Pepper Sauce (Cebiche de Pescado con Salsa de Rocoto) and a Parihuela (Seafood Soup).

The Cebiche went down easy (and delicious), but not heeding my own advice, I forged ahead with the Soup, and was only able to polish off half of it.

After laying in bed and trying to recover for a few hours, I caught up on some work and the Blog, and headed out to the Casino to teach them a lesson in Blackjack. My friend Dely met me there.

She weighs 95 pounds soaking wet, but eats like a linebacker. After an hour of playing, she announces that she is hungry, and wants to eat... Cebiche. Well, Punto Azul is a block from the casino, and they are open at night (traditionally, most Cebicherias are Lunch-only). So, Dely in tow, I head back.

She orders -- what else? -- Cebiche in the Red Pepper Sauce, and tells me that, since I was there already for Seafood today, I should get the Lomo Saltado.

We both put away our Food. I was proud of myself for just having the one dish, and headed back to the casino. I lost three dollars for the night. Dely won, and gave me her winnings for the Christmas Kids Fund that I'm involved with here.

Speaking of that, every year, a bunch of local guys and girls raise money and throw a party (with gifts!) for poor kids on the outskirts of Lima. I am lucky enough to be involved with them, and seeing the smiling little faces is worth a million bucks. You can read about it by CLICKING HERE. If you want to throw a few bucks at the program, write me at bigrich5@sprintmail.com or leave a comment here -- I will track you down!

That's it for the day.
