Somehow, for a vacation, I never get much sleep.
I passed on Breakfast, worked a while, then Ed and I wandered down to Brarranco, and randomly wound up at El Muelle be Barranco, a Cebicheria.
Ed played right into my hands by passing on the bonus, free appetizer: Clams a la Chhalaca.
Basically, a tiny Clam Cebiche, with everything mixed together.
For my real appetizer, I ordered a Casa with Crabmeat. It was so pretty, here's two pictures:
As all Causa fans can tell you, a Causa is mashed and seasoned Yellow Potatoes, shaped and used as a food delivery device. They aren't always this pretty, but they are always good!
The food that this one was delivering was Crabmeat, what we back home would call Crab Salad. There was also some Avocado involved, and it was delicious.
For our Main Courses, Ed had his favorite, Lomo Saltado, and I had a Picante de Mariscos..
Lomo Saltado is a Beef stir-fry, served with Rice and Fries. It's delicious, any time, anywhere. The Picante de Mariscos is mixed Seafood in a (not spicy, despite the name) creamy, yellow Sauce. It usually comes with Rice, but apparently, not here.
Later, in the hotel, before Dinner, I had some Aguaymanto, the Peruvian Fruit that I picked up yesterday. I love these things.
Ed & I had reservations at Astrid y Gaston, the 14th best restaurant in the world, and a long-time favorite of mine. I stumbled upon this restaurant ten years ago, before fame and fortune hit Gaston, and it has been on my list ever since.
They have a Tasting Menu and a regular (order what you want off of the piece of paper) menu. We signed up for the regular option. They sit you down to Bread, Olives and Curry Peanuts, just to start.
For our Appetizers, I ordered the Scallops and Ed had the Shrimp Croquettes.
I'm going to do a terrible job of describing these dishes because a) I'm tired and b) with these gourmet foods, you're never quite sure what's on your plate.
My Scallops were on a base of some Creamy, ridiculously delicious base that they claim is made from Cauliflower. The Scallops were topped with *something* and garnished with Pasta-looking things that were actually Parmesan Cheese. Fabulous.
But not as Fabulous as Ed's Croquettes. I tasted one, and they were just wonderful. And, for no apparent reason, there was a hunk of Pork underneath that Ed said was, "to die for." I wouldn't know; he wasn't giving any of it up.
For our Main Courses, I had the Aeropuerto, which is, in effect, really good Fried Rice. There was much more involved, and if you really want to know, check out the menu by clicking here, but trust me, it was really good Fried Rice. Ed had something billed as Steak and Mushrooms.
Other than a Fried Egg, I'm not all that sure what went into my dish, but it was fabulous. Ed's had diced Steak, Mushrooms all stir-fried and it was on top of Soba Noodles and there was also an Egg on his,
We were pretty full and happy, but I have been waiting for years to order the Chocolate Bomb. I keep seeing it and saying, "next time." Well, next time was here.
This was so wonderful, I gave it its own Blog Post. CLICK HERE to get all the details and see a video. But it was White Chocolate, filled with frozen Whipped Cream, Ice Cream, Nuts, Mystery Stuff, Coconut, and love.
I would just go there, sit at the Bar and order Coffee and the Bomb. Worth $17. Hell, it was a steal. The whole thing, including extra tip, was only US$120, and that included a Screwdriver for Ed. AT THE 14th BEST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD. You can't go to Outback and get out for less than $80 with the same amount of food, forget the quality.
We tried to go gamble afterwards, but we were both passing out, so we headed back to the hotel early.
Chocolate Bomb, yo.
