Thursday, March 10
When I say, "I'm getting too old for this," I usually mean that I can't run around all night. This time, however, it means: I'm getting old and feeble. I didn't take a picture of my Main Course for Lunch today, and I have No Clue what it was that I ate. Pretty Pathetic.
The day started with Ed and I walking to a local shop for Sandwiches.
I had a Cafe con Leche and a Pork Sandwich, and Ed had a Coffee and a Ham & Cheese Sandwich.
Later, in the house, I had some of the delicious thirty cent Chocolate Things from the one of the Empanada Stores nearby.
They are really, really good. And only One Sol.
We met the Lovely and Happy to Be Fed Dely for Lunch. She and Ed go way back. We headed down the block from my apartment to Embarcadero 41.
We started with Shots of Clam Cebiche for Dely, and a Leche de Tigre for me.
My Leche was excellent, and I tried one of Dely's shots, and they were only OK.
Main Dish time... this is where I am losing it.
Ed had the Parihuela (Seafood Soup), Dely had a Mixed Fish & Seafood Cebiche, and me... well, I have no clue what I had for Lunch. That's what happens when you don't take enough pictures of your Food.
After that, we headed back to the apartment to talk for a while. Dely headed off to work, Ed went to his hotel, and I laid down to try to revive my memory.
I ate the other two Chocolate Things some time in the afternoon.
For Dinner, we tried a new (to me) place, Nos Restaurante. I had purchased a Groupon for them a few weeks back, which was surprising, because Nos is owned by Virgilio Martinez, who also owns Central Restaurante, which is the 4th Best Restaurant in the World. So you wouldn't think that he would go the Groupon route, but who was I to argue?
My Groupon, which cost around $20, entitled us to share an Appetizer, each pick a Main Course, and we each got a drink. We started by sharing their version of Salchipappas.
Salchipappas are a tradition Peruvian kids' snack. They're (normally) French Fries topped with a cut-up Hot Dog. Kids love 'em.
This version was diced Yellow Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes, topped with either four or five different Hot Dogs/Sausages/Etc. There were some dipping Sauces, and they were really good. Kids wiuld hate these.
For our Main Courses, Ed had the Steak Sandwich, and I had Rice with Clams.
The Sandwich was excellent, Ed said. It had a ton of Avocado on it, ans well as other stuff to go with the Steak. My rice Dish was topped with Chopped Clams in a Sauce that I have No Idea What it Was, but the Rice was perfect, and the Clams in Mystery Sauce were great, too.
We have both apparently hit a wall, eating-wise. As Ed put it, his foot is on the brake, and I have taken mine off the gas. But whatever -- we both passed on Dessert.
So yes, Nos is less 'fancy' than Central, but for them to describe this as 'casual' is a travesty. It's an upscale restaurant, along the lines of Panchita. I liked it a lot, and will return, even without a coupon. Especially since they are open until midnight, seven days a week.
That was it for the day. I almost went out to hear my friend sing in his band, but I will do that Saturday. I was in bed before midnight.
Yes, l;ess fancy
slowing down
